Senior Congress leader in support of Kharge: Gehlot

New Delhi. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday said that all senior Congress leaders have decided to support Mallikarjun Kharge’s candidature for the party’s presidential election. It is noteworthy that Kharge will face former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor.

Gehlot met Kharge at his 10, Rajaji Marg residence here and thereafter declared his support for Kharge. Gehlot had on Thursday announced that he would not contest the election for the post of party president.
He told reporters outside Kharge’s residence that all the senior leaders had taken the decision of Kharge’s candidature together.

When asked whether he had offered to resign as the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Gehlot did not give a direct reply. He said that I have held many positions for the last 50 years with the blessings of the Gandhi family. Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi gave me their blessings. For me the position doesn’t matter but what matters is how to strengthen the party. I will try my best for this. (Language)
