Former BSP MLC’s son arrested from airport, 20 cases including rape registered

Saharanpur. The Uttar Pradesh Police has arrested Abdul Wajid, the fourth son of former BSP MLC Mohammad Haji Iqbal, from the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport. He was checking-in for a flight to Dubai. There was a reward of Rs 50,000 for information leading to his arrest.

Suraj Rai, superintendent of police (rural) Saharanpur, said, “We had already informed about his arrival and had also alerted the airport authorities in this regard.” Our team was also on the spot. As soon as he entered the airport and started the process. While checking in, our team arrested him from there. Around 20 cases, including rape, are registered against 36-year-old Wajid.
Iqbal’s three sons are already behind bars along with his brother and former MLC Mahmood Ali, who was arrested from Mumbai in July. The SP said that during preliminary interrogation, Wajid revealed that he was hiding in Ajmer Sharif. He had no idea about his father’s whereabouts.

Haji Iqbal, accused of running a mining syndicate in and around Saharanpur, is facing investigation for alleged money laundering of Rs 10,000 crore. He is under the scanner of central investigative agencies including Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO), Enforcement Directorate and Income Tax Department. They have not been arrested yet.

Saharanpur Police has attached Iqbal’s assets worth Rs 337 crore. The ED had attached Iqbal’s assets worth Rs 1,097 crore in 2021. (IANS)
