BJP Legislature Party meeting begins to elect new Chief Minister in Gujarat

Bhupendra Patel (60) on Friday resigned as Chief Minister along with his entire cabinet to pave the way for the formation of a new government in the state. The BJP has won the recently concluded assembly elections with a thumping majority.

Senior leaders Rajnath Singh, BS Yeddyurappa and Arjun Munda are present in the meeting as central observers of the BJP.

The meeting to elect a new leader is a mere formality as the party has already announced that Patel, who won a second consecutive term from Ghatlodhia assembly seat in Ahmedabad district by 1.92 lakh votes, will continue as chief minister. Patel had succeeded Vijay Rupani as the Chief Minister of Gujarat on September 7 last.

The party has announced that the swearing-in of the new government will take place on December 12, in which chief ministers of BJP-ruled states will be present along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The BJP registered a historic victory by securing 156 seats in the 182-member assembly.

BJP’s Gujarat unit chief CR Patil had earlier announced that Bhupendra Patel would continue as chief minister and the swearing-in ceremony of the new government would be held at the helipad ground in Gandhinagar on Monday.
