Delhi News: Contemplation on the depleting water level, resolve to rejuvenate 13 rivers

A program was organized by the National Afforestation and Environment Development Board in New Delhi. In which DPR was released regarding the rejuvenation of thirteen rivers. Union Minister of Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Union Minister of State Ashwini Choubey were present in the program. Along with this, senior officials of various state governments also joined the program through virtual medium.

At present, the shrinking of the river ecosystem and the depleting water level is a major problem in the country. The increasing water crisis is hindering the achievement of national goals. In view of this, a DPR was proposed for the rejuvenation of thirteen major rivers Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, Sutlej, Yamuna, Luni, Narmada, Godavari, Mahanadi, Krishna, Kaveri and Brahmaputra.

Let us inform that in the DPR, a total of 13 treatments and a model of plantation have been proposed for the rejuvenation of rivers. There are 283 treatment models for natural landscapes, 97 treatment models in agricultural landscapes and 116 treatment models for urban landscapes.

The proposed cumulative budget of these 13 DPRs is Rs 19,342.62 crore. The DPR is proposed to be implemented as nodal department to the State Forest Departments, the activities proposed in the DPR will help in increasing green cover, preventing soil erosion, water harvesting in the land etc.

Significantly, at present these thirteen rivers are spread over an area of ​​18,90,110 sq.km. Which is 57.45 percent of the country’s geographical area. The length of these rivers is 42,830 km including 202 tributaries.
