life on screen

It happened that Aamir Khan donated 25 lakh rupees for the flood victims of Assam. After this he was to attend the Independence Day celebrations in Guwahati and the next day his film ‘Lal Singh Chaddha’ was to be shown to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. But in the rest of the country, the kind of views expressed by the BJP people regarding Aamir Khan and his film, the matter was reversed. Suddenly Himanta Biswa Sarma called a press conference and said that Aamir Khan wanted to come here and he also spoke to me. But because this time we want to keep full focus on the importance of 75th anniversary of Independence Day and the tricolor campaign, I have requested Aamir Khan to postpone the program to Guwahati and asked him to come after Independence Day. Biswa Sarma told reporters that he keeps talking to Aamir Khan on the phone, so whenever I tell him he will come to Assam.

However, Amir did not reach Guwahati until four days after Independence Day. Meanwhile, both his ‘Lal Singh Chaddha’ and Akshay Kumar’s ‘Raksha Bandhan’ are almost out of the box office race and are being dropped from most of the screens. Especially the people running the campaign of Boycott of ‘Lal Singh Chaddha’ have now moved ahead considering their victory in this work. The responsibility of making some other films which have been released or are going to be flopped has also fallen on him.

His next victim seems to be ‘Dobara Hui’ which earned less than usual on the first day. Its director Anurag Kashyap and its heroine Taapsee Pannu are the target of the Boycott campaign. Both are believed to be members of the so-called ‘liberal gang’. Recently Anurag Kashyap had said that one of the major reasons for beating films is that people do not have money, if you impose GST on even small things of food and drink, then how will money be saved in people’s pockets? Anurag Kashyap seems to have got the prasad for this statement. Producer Ekta Kapoor of ‘Dobaara’ also praised Aamir Khan.

But Arjun Kapoor went several steps ahead. He said in an interview that ‘we made a mistake by keeping quiet about this. People in the industry think that their work will speak for them, but the trollers have made it a habit. But even more amazing was done by Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra. Responding to Arjun Kapoor’s talk, he said that it is not right to bully the public and instead of threatening people, Arjun Kapoor should focus on his acting. He also asked the question that ‘why do the tukde-tukde gang’s supporters who target Hinduism in their films threaten the public on their boycott?’

Seeing the reaction of these ministers of Madhya Pradesh, it does not seem that Himanta Biswa Sarma is going to call Aamir Khan to Guwahati soon. By the way, some film critics are still claiming that if these films were strong, then Boycott’s appeals would not have had much effect. Viacom18 Studios, a Reliance Group company, has denied the news that the distributors are seeking damages for the beating of ‘Lal Singh Chaddha’. The company said that it has distributed it on its own and there is no outside distributor. Rather, he also denied that the film was a heavy loss. According to him, the film earned 46 crores in the country and 39 crores overseas in the first four days and is yet to release in China where Aamir Khan is hugely popular. Nevertheless, the current indications are clear that the makers of the films which will release in the future should also gear up.
