India condemns North Korea’s intercontinental ballistic missile launch in UNSC, says threat to security

United Nations. India has condemned North Korea for its intercontinental ballistic missile launch in an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). India has expressed concern over the proliferation of nuclear and missile technologies, saying it has an “adverse effect” on peace and security in the region. North Korea had once again successfully launched an ICBM on November 17, which fell about 125 miles off the coast of Japan. It is being said that it is capable of targeting the whole of North America.

In an emergency meeting of the UNSC on North Korea on Monday, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ruchira Kamboj said that India condemns the recent intercontinental ballistic missile launch by North Korea. Kamboj said India calls for the full implementation of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions on North Korea. “We reiterate the need to address the proliferation of nuclear and missile technologies belonging to North Korea,” he said. The proliferation of nuclear and missile technologies is a matter of concern, as it has adverse implications for peace and security in the region, including India.

Kamboj said India expects the international community and the Security Council to show solidarity on this front. India reiterates its support for denuclearization as a path towards peace and security in the Korean Peninsula. At the meeting, the US and its allies on Monday strongly condemned North Korea’s intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test and called on it to limit its nuclear and missile programs.

However, Russia and China resisted attempts to put more pressure on Pyongyang and impose new sanctions. Following the meeting, US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield read a statement on behalf of the eight council members – Albania, France, Ireland, India, Norway, the United Arab Emirates, the UK and the US, as well as South Korea, Japan and four other countries. The statement condemned North Korea’s launches of weapons and ballistic missiles. “We call on all member states to condemn North Korea’s illegal ballistic missile launch and full implementation of existing Security Council resolutions,” the statement said. We will stick to diplomacy.
