There is a possibility of major political upheaval in Pakistan, which is constantly being surrounded by economic crisis. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has already been posing constant political challenges, has expressed his intention to organize a march to Islamabad to push for immediate fresh elections. Their morale was boosted by the massive success in the by-elections held on Sunday. Imran Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) won six of the eight parliamentary seats. Imran Khan was the only candidate on all the winning seats. Apart from parliamentary seats, PTI also won by-elections to two seats in the province in Punjab. These results have reaffirmed the high popularity of Imran Khan in the country. As soon as the election results were announced, Imran Khan announced that he would not take the oath of membership of the National Assembly. The PTI government had collapsed last April on a no-confidence motion in Parliament.

Since then PTI has been demanding fresh general elections. But the ruling Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) has again rejected the demand for new elections. This coalition has said that its government led by Shahbaz Sharif will continue for its entire term. This term is one year left. But it has been consistently confirmed that there is no mandate with this alliance. Imran Khan proved his growing popularity by winning 15 seats in the by-elections for 20 seats in the Punjab province’s assembly in July. Now the same thing has been reflected in the parliamentary by-elections. Whether it is true or not, but a large number of people in Pakistan believe in Imran Khan’s allegation that his government was brought down as part of a conspiracy hatched in the country at the behest of America. This has created a crisis of confidence in the country. In such a situation, the right way is to hold general elections immediately, otherwise there is a possibility of the country becoming a victim of extreme instability.
