‘Bank Wali Didi’ Radha is changing the lives of lakhs of women in UP, know what she is doing

UP In ‘Bank Wali Didi’ Radha is working to bring a big change in the lives of millions. In fact, Radha is one of the 58,000 BC Sakhis working in Uttar Pradesh, who have become self-sufficient by providing banking services to the people of her district from village to village. She has also been able to give her family a decent life in her village. She says everyone calls me as ‘Bank Wali Didi’. They call me late at night to withdraw and deposit money. I am happy to help them. Radha says that once, the husband of a Self Help Group (SHG) member met with an accident. She wanted to withdraw money from her bank account, but could not go to the bank branch at night so, she called me. I immediately reached his house and helped him to withdraw the money. It feels great to help someone in crisis.

BC Sakhi scheme was started in 2020

BC Sakhi Yojana was launched by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on May 22, 2020 to benefit the women of the state by giving them employment opportunities and promote financial inclusion. The program was designed under the ‘One Gram Panchayat – One BC Sakhi’ initiative formulated by NRLM. Then around 31,719 women associated with Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission have joined this scheme as Banking Sakhi and are providing banking services to the people in the villages. Under this initiative, Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission (UPSRLM) is recruiting and conducting 58,000 BC Sakhis in the state.

25 to 27 thousand rupees monthly income

Radha makes monthly transactions of around Rs 1.5 crore and earns a commission of Rs 25,000 to Rs 27,000. Being the only eligible woman in her village, Radha took up the job of a banking sakhi. Her husband supported her in this endeavor and soon Radha got trained. He received an assistance of Rs 75,000 in the form of loan from SHGs in September, 2021. In December 2021, she started working as a BC agent and started running her business from her home. Later he got his office established near the Panchayat Bhawan.

More than 50 percent of customers are women

As of June 2022, she has opened more than 150 Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana accounts, mostly women in her gram panchayat. She provides cash withdrawal, cash deposit, domestic money transfer (DMT), bill payment (utilities), investment (RD & FD), insurance (PMSBY and PMJJBY) and pension (APY) services to people. She enjoys an overdraft facility of Rs 43,000 with Bank of Baroda while handling cash up to Rs 2,00,000 for cash deposit or withdrawal transactions on a daily basis. To maintain liquidity and avoid cash crunch, he invested Rs 1,30,000 as working capital. Radha states that more than 50 percent of her clients are women. Female clients find it easy, reliable and appropriate to maintain confidentiality with female agents.

Scheme helping to become self-reliant

A total of 2,31,55,825 transactions worth more than Rs 51,75,01,94,777 have been done by women associated with Banking Sakhi in UP so far, which shows that this scheme can help rural women to become independent, self-respecting and self-reliant. has been Banking Sakhis have so far earned commission of over Rs 13,39,15,588 in the state while bringing banks to their doorsteps to make the lives of villagers more convenient. BC scheme is providing 24 hours banking services both in villages and cities. It has immense potential to provide employment to lakhs of women especially living in rural areas.
