America: This madman used to target Hindu women wearing sari-bindi, is now in jail!

A shocking news is coming from the US state of California. Here, a 37-year-old man named Lathan Johnson has been arrested by the local police on charges of hate-crime against Hindu women. The man, a resident of East Palo Alto, is accused of targeting women of Indian origin who wore saris. This process was going on since last June and till now he had made 14 women his victim.

Johnson’s modal operandi was that he would target Hindu women wearing saris, assaulting women’s husbands, snatching their jewelry and intimidating them. The local court, Judge Jeff Rossen, in his remarks, described Johnson’s act as “disgusting”.

News agency ABC7 reporter Dion Lim revealed in her post on social media that the women targeted were those who wore a lot of saris, wore bindi and visited temples. Samir Kalra of The Hindu American Foundation in the US has told the media that he feels the need to create awareness about this type of crime in the local Hindu community. Hindu festivals and holidays are approaching and since the festival is considered auspicious along with the tradition of wearing Swarnabhushan in the Hindu community, such incidents are creating fear in the community. He has urged the administration that there is a need to rein in the hate-crime against Asian-Americans.

Please tell that Johnson has not been granted bail at the moment. If found guilty in this case, he could face a maximum jail term of 63 years. The matter is for hearing on November 4.
