Member of Parliament in 1984: Mamata Banerjee became known as a young parliamentarian in the 1984 Lok Sabha elections. He defeated communist leader Somnath Chatterjee from Jadavpur seat. Although Malini of the CPI(M) was defeated by Bhattacharya in the 1989 elections, she emerged stronger after that. She again won the 1991 Lok Sabha elections and then went on to win the Kolkata South seat in the 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2009 general elections.

After this, she became the Chief Minister of the state for the second time in the year 2016, winning in 2021 but the tension was increased by the by-elections of Bhawanipur seat, which is now over.
