Virat Kohli’s ODI captaincy in danger despite giving up T20 captaincy

Virat Kohli’s decision to step down from India’s T20 captaincy after the World Cup next month is definitely about finding momentum with the bat. But it indicates that he may face similar things in ODIs as well.
Kohli has said that he will continue to be the captain in the other two formats. But no one can say for sure that he will be the captain of the Indian team in the 2023 ODI World Cup at home.
Management of workload is a perfectly acceptable reason for quitting T20 captaincy. But if India’s schedule is seen till 2023, apart from the World Cup, Team India has to play about 20 bilateral T20 matches.
A BCCI source said, "Virat knows that if the team does not perform well in the T20 World Cup in the UAE, then he could have been dropped from the limited overs captaincy. As far as limited overs captaincy is concerned, he has done well. He has eased some of the pressure on him, as it seems he was doing it on his own terms. If there is a drop in performance in T20, it may not happen in the 50 overs format."
Kohli hasn’t had full support in dressing form for quite some time now. Those who watch him closely believe that there is no flexibility in his working style. Whether it’s going into the World Test Championship final in Southampton with two spinners or not allowing a player to establish fourth place ahead of the 2019 World Cup, he lacks flexibility.
No one spoke out openly but the players felt more united when India beat Australia (unlike 2018-19) playing their best team despite falling behind.
he said, "It is very difficult to contact Kohli off the field. There is a glimpse of Dhoni in Rohit, but in a different way. He takes junior players to dinner, pats them on the back when they are depressed and is aware of the mental side of the players."
As far as the junior players are concerned, the biggest complaint against Kohli is that he leaves them in the middle in difficult times. Another cricketer said, "Kuldeep Yadav was out of plans after five wickets in Australia. The same happened with Rishabh Pant when he was not in form. Senior bowler Umesh Yadav, who has been a solid performer on Indian pitches, never got an answer as to why his name was not considered until someone got injured."
A senior BCCI official said with reference to the interesting aspect of the board’s press release issued on Thursday, "If you look at the statements of Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah, both have conveyed best wishes but didn’t say a single word whether he would be the captain till the 2023 World Cup. Therefore the conclusion that he will remain the captain cannot be reached."
