Uttarakhand: Clashes between UP police and villagers, woman dies

Dehradun. The wife of a block chief was killed in a clash between local residents and Uttar Pradesh Police personnel near Kashipur in Uttarakhand’s Udham Singh Nagar district on Wednesday evening. Officials said that five people, including two Uttar Pradesh Police personnel, were injured in the clash.

According to an official, the clash took place when a team of Uttar Pradesh Police from Thakurdwar reached Bharatpur village to search the house of Jaspur block chief Gurtaj Bhullar in search of mining mafia. According to the official, the police team had received a tip-off that the mining mafia Jafar was hiding in the house of block chief Bhullar. The police had declared a reward of Rs 50,000 on him.

According to the official, the police team reached Bhullar’s house like ordinary citizens, following which a dispute broke out. He said that both the sides opened fire, in which Bhullar’s wife Gurpreet, who was returning home from work, died. Udham Singh Nagar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manjunath TC said that the Uttar Pradesh Police team had not informed the Uttarakhand Police about the action in advance.

The superintendent said that after the family of the deceased lodged a complaint, the Uttarakhand Police has registered a case against 10-12 personnel of Uttar Pradesh Police under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). (Language)
