Tasnim Mir: Gujarat’s badminton player Tasneem Mir has created history. Tasneem, 16, has become the world’s No. 1 player in junior badminton. Tasneem reached the number 1 ranking due to her excellent performance last year. She is the first player in the country to do such a feat. Even veteran players like PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal could never become number 1 at the junior level.
What did Tasneem say on this special achievement?
Tasneem told news agency PTI that I cannot say that I expected it. I thought I would not be able to be number 1 as tournaments were getting affected by COVID-19 but I won three events in Bulgaria, France and Belgium. So I am really excited and happy that I finally became the number one in the world. This is a very good moment for me.
She said that now I will focus completely on the senior circuit and look forward to playing in Iran and Uganda next month. My target now is to improve my senior ranking. If I can get into the top 200 by the end of the year with some good performances, that would be great. What Tasneem has achieved, even Sindhu and Saina Nehwal could not do it. Sindhu was the number two player in the world during her U-19 days. Samia Imad Farooqui of Telangana came close to it, but could only reach the second position.
