Tamil Nadu college allowed to increase NEET-UG seats

New Delhi. The Delhi High Court has allowed a Tamil Nadu college to increase the number of students for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET)-Graduation session 2022, saying there is a growing need for qualified doctors. To accomplish this, it is necessary to improve the medical infrastructure and high-end colleges should not be denied the opportunity to increase the number of medical professionals.

The High Court made this observation while hearing a petition by Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College and Hospital in Tamil Nadu. In the petition, an appeal was made to reject the request to increase the number of students from 150 to 250.

Justice Sanjeev Narula said, “Increasing medical infrastructure is necessary to meet the growing need of more qualified doctors to serve the population of the country.” In such a situation, the role of regulatory bodies like NMC (National Medical Commission) becomes undeniably important. To ensure that there is no degradation in the quality of medical education, the process of granting approval should be followed really strictly.”

The plea appealed to the court to direct the NMC to grant approval letter to the college to admit 250 students per year from the academic year 2021-22. Advocate T. Singhdeo, representing the NMC, submitted that the commission had conducted a surprise inspection of the college and only 200 seats could be allowed on the request of the college.

The counsel for the college submitted that the institute is ready to increase the number of seats to 250 and if permission is not given for the same, there will be a huge waste of resources. After hearing the arguments of both the sides, the court allowed the college to increase the seat strength from 150 to 250.
