Aurangabad (Maharashtra). In today’s era, when disputes over land have become common, a rare case of 32 acres of land being registered in the name of monkeys in a village in Osmanabad district of Maharashtra has come to light. In Upala village of Osmanabad, people pay special respect to monkeys. They give food to them when they come to their door and sometimes even before starting the marriage ceremony they are honored.

As per the land records of Upala Gram Panchayat, 32 acres of land is in the name of all the monkeys living in the village. The village sarpanch Bappa Padwal told PTI, “The document clearly mentions that the land belongs to the monkeys, though who made this provision for the animals and when is not known.”

He told that earlier monkeys were a part of all the rituals performed in the village. Padwal said that there are now around 100 monkeys in the village and their numbers are decreasing in the last few years as the animals do not stay in one place for long. He said that the forest department had done plantation on the land and there was a house on the plot, which has now collapsed.

The sarpanch said, “Earlier, whenever marriages were held in the village, monkeys were first given gifts and only then the ceremony would begin. However now not everyone follows this practice.” He told that whenever the monkeys come to the door, the villagers feed them. No one forbids them to eat.
