Country’s ‘Steel Man’ Jamshed J Irani said goodbye to the world at the age of 86

Jamshed J Irani, the former Managing Director of Tata Steel and known as the ‘Steel Man’ of India, passed away in Jamshedpur late on Monday night.

Jamshed J Irani, former Managing Director of Tata Steel and considered the ‘Steel Man’ of India, who was awarded the country’s third highest civilian honor Padma Bhushan, died in Jamshedpur late on Monday night. Tata Steel informed about the demise of Steel Man. Irani, who has been associated with Tata Steel for more than four decades, retired from the board of Tata Steel in June 2011, leaving behind a legacy of 43 years. Jamshed J Irani, the former MD of Tata Steel, was known as the “Steel Man of India”.

Tata Group is deeply saddened to inform about the demise of Padma Vibhushan Dr Jamshed J Irani. He breathed his last on 31 October at 10 pm in Jamshedpur. The Tata Steel family extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”

Such was his early life

Jamshed J Irani was born on June 2, 1936. His mother’s name was GG Irani and father Khurshid Irani. He did his B.Sc from Science College, Nagpur in 1956. While there, he completed his MSc from Nagpur University in 1958. He then went to the University of Sheffield, UK as a JN Tata Scholar and completed his Masters in 1960.

Founded the Tata Iron and Steel Company

Significantly, after returning to India in 1968, he founded the Tata Iron and Steel Company, which is today known as Tata Steel. He joined the company as an assistant to the director in charge of research and development. Apart from Tata Steel and Tata Sons, Dr. Irani also served as a director of several Tata Group companies, including Tata Motors and Tata Teleservices. Apart from this, he did his PhD in 1963. Talking about his family, Jamshed J Irani is survived by his wife Daisy and three children Zubin, Nilofar and Tanaaz.
