The central government is contemplating to allow retail sale of small LPG cylinders through ration shops. Along with this, the government can also give permission to introduce financial services to make these shops financially viable.

After the meeting, the Ministry of Food and Consumer Affairs said in a statement, “Proactive measures should be taken to increase the financial viability of the Fair Price Shops (FPCs) … on the scheme of retail sale of small LPG cylinders through FPS.” The representatives of Petroleum Marketing Companies (OMCs) have appreciated the proposal for retail sale of small LPG cylinders through Fair Price Shops (FPCs).

Work will be done through CSC
The OMC said that necessary assistance will be given for this through coordination with the governments of the interested state and union territories. State governments said that with the cooperation of CSC, the profitability of FPC will also increase. He also said that they will coordinate with CSCs to review the profitability as per local requirements. On the proposal to provide financial services through FPS, the representatives of Department of Financial Services (DFS) informed that necessary assistance will be provided for this through coordination with the interested states.

Piyush Goyal tweeted
The statement said that the government is planning to give the benefit of Mudra loan to FPS dealers to raise capital. The Food Secretary has asked the states to start these initiatives and tweak them according to their needs. Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal tweeted, “Prepared scheme for retail sale of LPG cylinders through FPS. States and Union Territories will sensitize FPS dealers about this.”

There are 5.26 lakh ration shops
Goyal said that his ministry calls for taking proactive steps to increase the financial viability of FPS. There are about 5.26 lakh ration shops in the country through which subsidized food grains are being distributed to the poor beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act.
