Ruckus over currency notes: Why not Ambedkar’s portrait

Chandigarh. A day after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal demanded the publication of images of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi on currency notes, Congress MP Manish Tewari on Thursday asked if the constitution makers on the new notes. Why not print the picture of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar.

The Congress has reacted sharply to the demand of the national convener of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Congress’ Punjab unit chief Amarinder Singh Raja accused Kejriwal of resorting to “competitive Hindutva” to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Gujarat. Reacting to Kejriwal’s statement, Congress MP from Anandpur Sahib in Punjab, Tiwari tweeted, “Why shouldn’t Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar’s portrait on the new series of currency notes? The portrait of Mahatma Gandhi on one side and the portrait of Dr. BR Ambedkar on the other.’ He tweeted, “Non-violence, constitutionalism and egalitarianism form a unique combination that will aptly combine the modern Indian genius.”

Significantly, in a press conference on Wednesday, Kejriwal had urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to consider publishing images of Lord Ganesha and Lakshmi on Indian currency notes. (Language)
