Justice DY Chandrachud takes oath as Chief Justice

New Delhi. Justice Dhananjay Y. Chandrachud (Dhananjay Y. Chandrachud) took the oath of office (oath) on Wednesday as the 50th Chief Justice of India (CJI). Justice D.Y. Chandrachud has been part of an important bench giving decisions in important cases like Ayodhya dispute, right to privacy.

President Draupadi Murmu administered him the oath of office at a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He took oath in the name of God in English language. The President appointed him as the next CJI on October 17. He was elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court on 13 May 2016. He replaces Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, whose term ended on November 8.

Justice Chandrachud will hold the post for two years till November 10, 2024. Supreme Court judges retire at the age of 65.

Vice President and Rajya Sabha Speaker Jagdeep Dhankhar, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and Kiren Rijiju attended the oath ceremony. Former Chief Justice Lalit was also present at the function.

Justice Chandrachud, the longest serving CJI in the country, Justice Y. V. is the son of Chandrachud. His father was the head of the Indian judiciary from 22 February 1978 to 11 July 1985. This is the first time in the more than seven-decade-long history of the Supreme Court of India that the son of a former Chief Justice has held the position.

Justice Chandrachud, who sees dissent as the ‘safety valve of democracy’, has been part of several Constitution Benches and Supreme Court benches that have delivered landmark judgments. Justice Chandrachud spoke to his father Y.K. on important issues like adultery and right to privacy. There was no hesitation in overturning the decision of V. Chandrachud.

He deals with Ayodhya land dispute, decriminalization of homosexual relations under Section 377 of IPC, legality of Aadhaar scheme, Sabarimala issue, grant of permanent commission to women officers in the army, permanent commission to women officers in the Indian Navy. , has been part of a bench deciding important matters like declaring unconstitutional Section 497 of the IPC which criminalises adultery.

A bench headed by Justice Chandrachud last year termed the second wave of the global pandemic as a ‘national crisis’, and also issued several directions to deal with it and remove the hardships of the people. Justice Chandrachud, known for his penchant for work, on September 30, 2022, presided over a bench, which was nearly five hours more than the apex court’s regular working time, to hear 75 cases before the start of Dussehra holidays. Justice Chandrachud was a judge of the Bombay High Court from 29 March 2000 to 31 October 2013. After that he was appointed as the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court. After completing his BA Honors in Economics from St Stephen’s College in the national capital, he did his LLB from Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi and LLM from Harvard Law School, USA and a doctorate in Forensic Science. (Language)
