Jharkhand: Income Tax raids on Congress MLAs, disclosure of transactions worth crores

According to a statement issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes on Tuesday, during the raids started on November 4, Ranchi, Godda, Bermo, Dumka, Jamshedpur and Chaibasa of Jharkhand, Patna (Bihar), Gurugram (Haryana) and Kolkata (West Bengal) were searched at a total of 50 locations.

The officials have identified the two MLAs as Kumar Jaimangal alias Anoop Singh and Pradeep Yadav. MLA from Bermo seat, Jaimangal, while talking to reporters outside his Ranchi residence that day, also confirmed the action and said that he was giving full cooperation to the teams of Income Tax Department conducting the raids.

Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) represents the Poriyahat assembly seat, Pradeep Yadav, who joined Congress after splitting from JVM-P. The Congress is a partner of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led ruling coalition in the state led by Chief Minister Hemant Soren. The action was taken against certain business groups engaged in coal trading/transportation, execution of civil contracts, extraction of iron ore and production of sponge iron, the CBDT statement said.
It said, the people whose whereabouts were searched include two politically exposed persons and their associates.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) is the policy making body for the Income Tax Department. The CBDT said that cash worth over Rs 2 crore has been seized and unaccounted transactions/investments of more than Rs 100 crore have been detected so far. According to the CBDT, a large number of ‘infringing’ documents and digital evidence have also been recovered in the raids.

Jaimangal had filed a police complaint in August against three of his party MLAs Irfan Ansari, Rajesh Kachhap and Naman Bixal Kongari, alleging that they were trying to topple the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in Jharkhand led by Chief Minister Hemant Soren. are plotting.

The complaint was filed after three Congress MLAs were arrested with cash in West Bengal in July. State Congress spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan had alleged on the day of the raids that the action of the tax department was part of a campaign to destabilize governments in non-BJP ruled states.
