Batting first, Delhi Capitals scored 172 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in 20 overs. Opener Prithvi Shaw scored 60 and captain Rishabh Pant scored 51 runs. In reply, CSK achieved the target of 173 runs losing 7 wickets. Opener Rituraj Gaikwad, who was in excellent form, scored 70 and Robin Uthappa scored 63 runs.

CSK needed 24 runs to win in the last two overs. Dhoni took the team closer to victory by hitting a six off Avesh Khan’s ball. After this, he gave the team a thrilling victory by hitting three fours in the last over of the innings. CSK has reached the final of IPL for the 9th time.

Praising Dhoni’s brilliant innings, Ponting said, ‘He is one of the great players. Seeing the situation in the match, we were sitting in the dugout thinking whether Ravindra Jadeja would come to bat or Mahendra Singh Dhoni. But I said that Dhoni will come to the crease. Ponting further said that look Dhoni may have retired, but I think he is one of the great finishers. Dhoni’s team CSK will play the title match of IPL-14 on 15 October. He will face the winner of the second qualifier.
