China submitted its draft resolution to the IAEA against the Ocus Group for providing nuclear-powered submarines to Australia. China tried to get the resolution passed at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) general conference held in Vienna from 26 September to 30 September. The Ocus (Australia, UK and US) security partnership was announced in September last year.

Sources said China argued that the initiative violated their responsibilities under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). A source said, India took a clear stand on the matter, recognizing the soundness of the technical assessment by the IAEA. The Indian Mission in Vienna worked closely with several IAEA member countries in this regard.

India’s shrewd diplomacy has helped many smaller countries to take a clear stand on the Chinese proposal, the source said. When China realized that its proposal would not get a majority, it withdrew its draft resolution on 30 September. Sources said that India’s efficient and effective diplomacy was appreciated by the IAEA member countries, especially the AUCUS members.
