FIFA World Cup 2022 Qualifying: Uruguay’s hopes of playing the Qatar World Cup have been greatly reduced after a 3-0 loss to Bolivia. After this defeat, Uruguay’s team is seventh in the 10-team South American Qualifier group. Uruguay now have only four games left to reach next year’s World Cup. The Uruguay Football Federation has also sacked the team’s coach Oscar Tabarez amid the team’s poor performance in the World Cup qualifiers.

Tabrez, 74, spent 15 years in his second stint as coach of the Uruguay national team, including the last three World Cups. He also led Uruguay to fourth place in the 2010 tournament in South Africa. Under Tabrez’s coach, the team also won the Copa America in 2011. In his first term, Tabrez coached Uruguay from 1988 to 1990. The Uruguay Football Federation has issued a statement saying, ‘It was a difficult decision, but we had to take this decision in view of the current circumstances and commitment to the future.’

Tabrez has expressed anger over this decision of the Football Federation. In his response, he has said, ‘I am a professional, I have signed a contract and everything I should do is written in it. I don’t know who can ask me to resign. The Uruguay Federation has not yet told who will be the next coach of the next team in place of Tabrez.
