In the last month i.e. October 2021, there was a decline of 27.15% in the sales of passenger vehicles and a decline of 24.94% in the sales of two-wheelers compared to October 2020. These figures have been released by SIAM i.e. Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). SIAM said on Friday that the shortage of semiconductors has started affecting the production of automakers. Due to this, the wholesale sales of passenger vehicles in India have declined by 27 percent on a year-on-year basis.

Passenger vehicle sales last month stood at 2,26,353 units as against 3,10,694 units during the same period a year ago. The latest data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) clearly states that there has also been a decline in the deliveries of two-wheelers to dealers. This figure stood at 15,41,621 units this year as against 20,53,814 units in October 2020. That is, a decline of 25 percent was seen.

In terms of motorcycle dispatches, this too declined by 26 per cent to 10,17,874 units last month as compared to 13,82,749 units in the year-ago period. SIAM says that scooter sales fell 21 percent to 4,67,161 units from 5,90,507 units in the same month a year ago. Last month, the sales of vehicles in passenger vehicles, three-wheeler, two-wheeler and quadricycle categories declined by 25 percent to 17,99,750 units from 23,91,192 units in October 2020.

SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon has said that the manufacturers were anticipating the festive season to recover from the huge fall in sales in the early part of the financial year 2021-22. However, the industry has been badly hit by shortage of semiconductors and steep rise in raw material cost. He said last month, the total production of passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, two-wheelers and quadricycles stood at 22,14,745 units, which is 22 percent less than 28,30,844 units in October 2020.
