David Warner will open in 2021 T20 World Cup: Australia opener David Warner’s bat may have been silent in IPL 2021, but limited overs captain Aaron Finch today said that he will play as an opener in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Warner hasn’t played any international matches in the shorter format in more than a year, but Finch backed his opening teammate and said he would be looking forward to the T20 World Cup in Oman and the United Arab Emirates from October 17. I will start the innings. Due to poor form, Sunrisers Hyderabad has dropped him from the playing XI in the Indian Premier League this year.

Finch said before leaving for the United Arab Emirates for the T20 World Cup, “Yeah, definitely he (Warner) is one of the best players to have played for Australia. I have no doubts about his preparations. No doubt he loves playing for Hyderabad, but I know he is still practicing. He will be ready to play.”

Warner has not played any T20 International for Australia since September 2020. He could not play in the last 14 matches of the last four series due to injury and then rest.

In IPL 2021 (both phases), he has been able to score only two half-centuries in eight innings. Sunrisers Hyderabad removed him as captain during the first leg of the IPL season in India. He did not tour the Caribbean and Bangladesh with the Australian team due to rest. In the second phase of the IPL, he scored zero and then two runs in the first two matches, so that Sunrisers’ team again did not give him a place in the playing XI.

Finch himself will play the tournament in July after undergoing surgery to repair his knee ‘cartilage’. Initially, there was doubt about his availability for Australia’s two warm-up matches against New Zealand (18 October) and India (20 October). But Finch said he was confident he would be available to play in both the matches.
