‘Chillar Baba’ murdered for not giving money for liquor

New Delhi. A 70-year-old man, who owned a tea stall in Delhi, was murdered allegedly because he refused to pay money to a person he knew to buy liquor.

Police said on Sunday that the accused, identified as 44-year-old Johan Kewat, has been arrested. At the same time, the deceased has been identified as ‘Chillar Baba’ who had a tea shop at Nigambodh Ghat here.

According to the police, the accused used to keep his money with the elderly. Police said the incident took place on the intervening night of October 13 and 14 when the accused asked ‘Chillar Baba’ for his money so that he could buy liquor, but the elder refused to give him the money and allegedly abused him.

According to the police, the accused attacked the elderly man with a stick and fled from the spot after the death of the elderly man. North Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sagar Singh Kalsi said that on October 14, the police was informed that a dead body was lying near Pahari Ghat on the banks of Yamuna. He said that the body had injury marks on the head.

The DCP said that a case was registered under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and footage of more than 30 CCTV cameras installed at Nigambodh Ghat was scanned and after questioning more than 30 people, Kevat was apprehended. According to the DCP, he told the police that he had known the old man for eight years and was very close to them and that he used to keep his money with them. (Language)
