Sourav Ganguly on Virat Kohli: Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly said that when Virat Kohli refused to continue as India’s T20 captain, the selectors named Rohit Sharma. Had made up his mind to hand over the command of the ODI team, because the national team could not have two different captains in the limited overs format.

The BCCI on Wednesday appointed Rohit Sharma as the captain of the ODI team till the 2023 ODI World Cup. Ganguly said that Kohli was talked about in this regard and he has accepted the decision.

BCCI President and former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly said, we had requested Virat Kohli not to step down as T20 captain, but he did not want to continue in this position. That’s why the selectors felt that they could not have two different captains in the two formats of the white ball.

Ganguly said the selectors felt that the white-ball format would confuse multiple captains, so the Chetan Sharma-led committee suggested that it would be better to have only one captain.

Ganguly said, “I don’t know (about the confusion) but that’s what they (selectors) felt. Similarly, it was concluded that Rohit should captain the team in white ball cricket and Virat should captain the team in red ball cricket.

How will Rohit do as an ODI captain? Ganguly said that he will not make any predictions. But he has full faith in the ability of the new captain. He said, it is very difficult to predict. I wish him all the best and hope he does a good job.

But was it taken into account that Kohli’s winning record as ODI captain in 95 matches is more than 70 per cent, he said, “Yes, we had considered it, but if you look at Rohit’s record,” he said. Look, in all the ODIs he has captained India, he has been very good. But the point is that white ball teams could not have two captains.

The question of the team not winning any ICC trophy under Kohli’s captaincy was also asked, but the board president refused to tell about the discussion on it. “What things were discussed and what the selectors said, I can’t tell much about it,” he said. But this is the main reason for making Rohit the captain of the white ball and Virat has accepted it.
