Meanwhile, some measures were implemented from Saturday under the Revised Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to tackle air pollution in and around Delhi. Under the revised GRAP, restrictions on polluting activities can be imposed up to three days in advance, based on the weather forecast.

The IMD had said on Thursday, ‘The southwest monsoon has withdrawn from Punjab, parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, western Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and entire Delhi.

Director General of India Meteorological Department Mrityunjay Mohapatra said, ‘The cyclonic circulation in the northeast direction over the Bay of Bengal is expected to move towards Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, which will bring good rains in the Gangetic plains.’

Mahpatra further said that due to the south-west monsoon this time the north and north-west region of the country received six per cent more rainfall than normal in September, which helped in reducing the rain deficit in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand. It is expected that the late withdrawal of monsoon from the Gangetic plains will prove to be helpful for the farmers during the Rabi season.
