Kolkata. Veteran CPI(M) leader and former West Bengal minister Manvendra Mukherjee passed away at a city hospital on Tuesday afternoon. He was 67 years old. The Left leader was popularly known in the political circles of West Bengal as Manav Mukherjee. According to Mohd Salim, state secretary of the CPI(M), Mukherjee was admitted to the hospital after feeling unwell and suffering a brain haemorrhage. He suffered two consecutive heart attacks on Tuesday afternoon, after which he passed away. His body will be kept at Peace Haven Mortuary on Tuesday night. On Wednesday, it will be taken to the party headquarters in Kolkata where party leaders, supporters and workers will pay homage to the departed leader.
After this, according to his last wish, his dead body will be donated to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. After completing his graduation from St. Xavier’s College, he started his post graduation in business management from Calcutta University. But his eagerness to lead an active political life with the CPI(M) prompted him to discontinue his studies and join the party as a full-time worker. He was a five-time MLA from the Beleghata assembly constituency in Kolkata in 1987 and 2006. He had served as a minister in the Left Front regime, handling important portfolios such as Information Technology, Tourism, Youth Affairs and Environment.
