RJD MP Manoj Jha had to cancel Pak tour, no approval from Ministry of External Affairs

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and Rajya Sabha member Manoj Jha yesterday told on Monday that the central government has refused to give political approval to his proposed visit to Pakistan. Terming the rejection of his application as unfortunate, MP Jha said the visit would have given him an opportunity to highlight the great tradition of Indian political parties in fighting for the democratic rights of the people. He said that Asma Jehangir was an activist fighting for the rights of minorities in Pakistan. Asma passed away in 2018.

Jha as guest speaker on the topic ‘The Role of Political Parties in Upholding Democratic Rights’ at the concluding session of the 4th Asma Jehangir Conference by Asma Jehangir Foundation, Pakistan Bar Council, Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan and AGHS Legal Aid Cell on 23 October. was invited to participate.
Jha, a senior Rashtriya Janata Dal leader, said that he got approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs regarding the Foreign Grants (Regulation) Act, but the Ministry of External Affairs did not give him political approval. “This would have given me an opportunity to explain on behalf of the Indian Parliament how we fight for the democratic rights of the people on the streets and in Parliament,” he said.

Manoj Jha said that he received a letter from the Union Home Ministry on Monday, seeking prior permission under Section 6 of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010 for accepting foreign hospitality during his visit to Lahore for a two-day conference. The online application has been approved. He, however, said the Ministry of External Affairs rejected his application without giving any “political clearance”.
MP Jha said, “I was very keen to participate in this conference.” He told that he had planned to go to Pakistan via the Wagah border on October 20 and return on October 24.
