Rishi Sunak will contest PM’s election again
London. Former UK finance minister, Indian-origin Rishi Sunak will again contest for the post of Conservative Party leader and prime minister. He announced it officially on Sunday. Monday is the last day for filing nominations. A day before announcing his candidature, Rishi Sunak met former Prime Minister Boris Johnson. This was the first meeting between the two after Sunak resigned from Johnson’s cabinet. There is news of Johnson being the candidate again for the post of leader of the Conservative Party.
However, Sunak announced his candidacy on Twitter: “The UK is a great country, but we are facing a huge economic crisis.” That’s why I am ready to be the leader of the Conservative Party and the next Prime Minister. I want to fix the economy of the country, I want to unite the party. Liz Truss resigned as Prime Minister on October 20. Earlier, Truss became the Prime Minister of the country only after defeating Sunak.
After Truss’s resignation, there is talk of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson running for re-election. Amidst these discussions, Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak, who was the Finance Minister in his government, met late on Saturday night and had a face-to-face conversation. Sunak had resigned as the finance minister in July. After this there was bitterness between him and Boris Johnson. After that this is believed to be their first private conversation.
The media is calling this meeting a ‘secret summit’. Because no one knew about this meeting except very close ones. It is believed that Sunak and Johnson only discussed the nomination. The ‘Sunday Telegraph’ report said about the meeting of the two leaders – the two leaders discussed working together to avoid the situation of civil war in the Conservative Party.
According to some other reports, former Prime Minister Johnson has offered Sunak to become number two in his government. But Sunak Camp says that when he has been the Finance Minister in the past, why accept this offer. However, Sunak has learned a big lesson after his loss to Truss in the previous match. This time they do not want to take the contest to the voting of permanent members of the Conservative Party. Sunak was ahead in the voting of MPs. But in the voting of party members, Sunak got 60,399 votes and Truss got 81,326 votes and Sunak lost. If Sunak puts the number of his supporters above one hundred and his opponent gets the support of less than one hundred, he will win the election.
