Pink diamonds are the most sought after diamonds in the global market
Let us tell you, pink diamonds are the rarest of the precious gems and the most sought after diamonds in the global market. The Williamson Pink Star was named after two other pink diamonds. The first is the 23.60-carat Williamson diamond that was received as a wedding gift to the late Queen Elizabeth II in 1947, while the second is the 59.60-carat Pink Star diamond that sold for a record US$72 million at auction in 2017. A 11.5-carat pink star diamond has been auctioned in Hong Kong. Four buyers competed to buy this precious diamond. Two people were present at the Hong Kong auction house and two buyers were bidding over the phone. Eventually this deal was closed for 57.7 lakh US dollars i.e. about 480 crores.
Pink diamonds are the rarest and most valuable of colored diamonds
Pink diamonds are the rarest and most valuable of the colored diamonds. Tobias Cormind, managing director of UK jewelry retailer 77 Diamonds, said the surprise sale proved that high-quality diamonds can still fetch good value in a volatile economy. Speaking on the occasion, Wenho Yu, Sotheby’s President of Jewelery and Watches in Asia, said Friday’s sale not only testifies to the resilient demand for high quality diamonds in Asia, but also raises awareness of the acute shortage of pink diamonds.
This was not the first time such an auction took place.
It is worth noting that even though the auction itself may be rare, but another such diamond was auctioned. A white diamond diamond called The Rock was auctioned in Geneva, which was found in a mine in South Africa. The weight of this diamond was 228.31 carats. Another 205.7 carat yellow diamond was also auctioned in this auction. The name of this diamond was The Red Cross Diamond. The world record for pink diamonds was set in 2017, when a stone known as the CTF Pink Star was sold in Hong Kong for $71.2 million.
