BJP could have shown generosity in UP
The Bharatiya Janata Party calls itself the most democratic party, but the reality is that it does not show any kind of liberality in politics, which is the first condition of democracy. When the Samajwadi Party’s seats in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council decreased from 11 to nine, it hurriedly ended its record of the main opposition party. It is legally correct that a party must have 10 MLCs to remain the main opposition party in a 100-member house. In this sense, it can be said that the BJP has not done anything legally wrong. When the SP has nine members, the leader of the opposition status of its leader has ended.
But the same BJP had accepted the status of the main opposition party and leader of opposition despite having only three MLAs in the Delhi Assembly. Seven MLAs are needed to become the main opposition party in the Delhi Assembly, whereas in 2015, the BJP won only three. Yet the Aam Aadmi Party government gave the BJP the status of the main opposition party. But the BJP ended the status of SP after one MLA was short. Similarly, Congress has 52 MPs instead of 54 in Lok Sabha, so BJP has not recognized it as the main opposition party.
However, the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council has also been fully occupied by the BJP. The BJP has 72 councilors in the 100-member house. One and a half months ago, till May 27, there were 11 councilors of SP, which has now reduced to nine. That is when its leader Lal Bihari Yadav’s Leader of Opposition status has ended. For the first time in the history of the last 110 years, it has happened that there is no Congress member in the Legislative Council. Think, Congress has two MLAs in the 403-member assembly and not a single member in the hundred-member Legislative Council. Yet the party has sent three state leaders from different states to the Rajya Sabha!
