6.7 magnitude earthquake strikes northern Philippines
Manila. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology felt a 6.7-magnitude earthquake in the northern Philippines on Tuesday night and said it was expected to cause heavy damage. Which arrived at 22:59 local time, at a depth of 28 km, about 7 km north-west of the town of Tyneg in Abra Province, on the main island of Luzon. The institute said the quake was also felt in Ilocos Sur province and surrounding areas, including the city of Baguio.
It said the tectonic earthquake would trigger the aftershock. There are no preliminary reports of damage or casualties. A tsunami warning has not yet been issued. Due to its location along the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’, the Philippines has frequent seismic activity. A 7.0 magnitude earthquake also affected Abra province in July, causing landslides and damage to buildings, killing at least four people and injuring 130. (IANS)
