Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has expressed confidence of using green fuel in all vehicles in the country after five years.

Gadkari has expressed hope that in the coming years, the utility of petrol in vehicles will be completely eliminated. Gadkari said this in a statement in Akola, Maharashtra. During the speech here, he stressed on the use of green hydrogen, ethanol and other green fuels. “I am sure that after five years, the country will run out of petrol. Your cars and scooters will be completely based on green hydrogen, ethanol, CNG or LNG,” he said.

Flex-fuel has been suggested

Earlier, Gadkari has insisted on introducing flex fuel ie alternative fuel-powered vehicles. In the past, Gadkari had asked car makers to give priority to indigenous production of flex engines. According to Gadkari, ethanol is now easily available in the country. 70 percent of the petrol consumption in the country is done by two wheelers. Hence, there is a need to develop in-house technology for flex fuel vehicles.

How does Flex Engine work?

A type of fuel mixture sensor ie fuel blender sensor is used in this engine. It adapts itself according to the amount of fuel in the mixture. This sensor reads the ethanol/methanol/gasoline ratio, or the alcohol concentration of the fuel. It then sends a signal to the electronic control module and this control module then controls the delivery of individual fuels. Cars with flex engines are quite different from vehicles with bi-fuel engines. Bi-fuel engines have separate tanks, whereas in flex fuel engines, you can put multiple types of fuel in a single tank. These engines are specially designed.

Such vehicles run abroad

A car with a flex engine may use gasoline with ethanol and gasoline with methanol. In this, the engine designs it according to its own. At present, ethanol is mostly used in it. Such cars run quite a lot in Brazil, America, Canada and Europe.

But hydrogen is filled in only 5 to 7 minutes. It also gives a very good range. A full tank of hydrogen fuel can travel up to 650 km. It can be called a completely zero emission car as it only emits water in the emission.

Challenges for hydrogen cars?

Hydrogen fuel is pollution free. Also, it can cover a distance of 600 km once the tank is full, but with this the challenges are not less. Hydrogen gas is highly flammable. In such a situation, when it is completely filled in the fuel tank, there is a risk of accident while driving. When the tank explodes, it can cause heavy damage by taking an area of ​​10 meters around it. Hence this fuel tank is made quite strong. This also increases the cost of these vehicles. Hydrogen fuel is also costlier than petrol and diesel.
