There is no proposal to equalize the prices of petrol and diesel, the information given by the government in Parliament
Petrol Diesel Prices Update: The central government has said that it has no plans to make petrol and diesel prices uniform across the country. Rameshwar Teli, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas has said these things in response to a question asked in the Rajya Sabha.
Prices not proposed to be uniform
In fact, Rajya Sabha MPs P Bhattacharya and Harnath Singh Yadav had asked the question that in order to control the rising prices of petroleum products, is the government making any such policy so that the tax levied in the states can be made uniform? Responding to this, the Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas said that no proposal is under consideration with the government. He said that the difference in the prices of petrol and diesel depends on the freight rates, VAT (Value Added Tax) and local levies.
GST Council has not recommended
He said that in order to bring petrol, diesel, natural gas and ATF (Aviation Turbine Fuel) under the purview of GST, the recommendation of the GST Council is necessary for inclusion in GST as per Section 9(2) of the GST Act. And so far the GST Council has not recommended inclusion of petroleum products and natural gas in GST.

The Minister of State for Petroleum told the House that with effect from 26 June 2010, the prices of petrol and 19 October 2014, diesel prices have been handed over to the market. Government oil companies fix the prices of both petroleum products on the basis of international prices, rupee-dollar exchange rate.
