Hydrogen Train: India Hydrogen It is developing trains that run from the state and they will be ready by 2023. In order to save electricity and fuel, the government is focusing primarily on hydrogen-powered trains. In the coming times, the government is trying to remove dependence on fuel. The use of green hydrogen as a rail fuel offers many benefits, including supporting the goals of zero carbon emissions.
Which countries have developed hydrogen-powered trains?
So far only Germany has developed hydrogen-powered trains. This year Germany launched the world’s first fleet of hydrogen-powered passenger trains. French company Alstom has developed 14 trains with hydrogen fuel cell drives at a cost of about $92 million. India got the first indigenous hydrogen fuel cell bus developed by KPIT-CSIR in Pune last month.
What will be the specialty of this train?
- The power needed in hydrogen-powered trains is supplied through a fuel cell, which generates energy by combining the hydrogen stored on the train’s roof with the oxygen in the air. No carbon-dioxide is emitted in this process.
- Hydrogen trains can be deployed anywhere. Can also be fitted to existing trains and lines. No separate arrangement is required for this.
- Hydrogen fuel cell trains can cover long distances of up to 1000 km at a maximum speed of 140 km/h. It covers ten times more distance than electric trains and also does not take much time to refuel. In 20 minutes, enough fuel can be filled to cover a distance of 18 hours.
- Fuel cells are low in cost and maintenance. According to a report by consulting firm Roland Berger, its cost is very low compared to diesel or electric trains.
- Hydrogen-powered trains are comfortable. There is not much sound coming out when it is running. Hydrogen provides a great driving experience. This is more important for areas where pollution remains a major problem.
