Income tax department is investigating 48,702 income tax returns filed in 2020-21, the government told Parliament
ITR Scrutiny: The Income Tax Department is scrutinizing 48,702 income tax returns filed. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary has given this information to the Parliament. He said that 48,702 ITRs are being scrutinized on the basis of Computer Aided Scrutiny Selection (CASS) in the Income Tax Returns filed for the financial year 2019-20 and assessment year 2020-21, which is 0.0725 percent of the ITR pool.

In fact, the question was asked to the government that the government has issued guidelines for ITR scrutiny for the financial year 2021-22 on what percentage of random basis through Computer Aided Scrutiny Selection (CASS)? Responding to this, the Minister of State for Finance said, No sir, the Income Tax Department has not issued any guidelines for Computer Aided Scrutiny Selection for 2021-22.

Deny the talk of targeting small taxpayers
It also asked the government whether notices are being sent to small taxpayers while large taxpayers are evading random scrutiny and why are small taxpayers with income less than Rs 1 crore being targeted? Rejecting the issue of sending notices to small taxpayers, the Minister of State for Finance said that ITR scrutiny is done through the selection process. There are different criteria for selecting such cases in which income limit does not matter. Cases from any income group can be selected which fall under the criteria set for scrutiny.
