According to that legend related to Sharad Purnima, a moneylender had two daughters and both of them used to observe Poornamasi fast. The elder sister used to do the entire fast properly, but the younger sister used to do half-incomplete fasting and consider it to be itshree. On time both the sisters got married. After marriage, all the children born of the younger sister died as soon as they were born, and all the children of the elder sister would live. Concerned about this, the younger sister called the pundits one day and told them her grief and asked the reason for its redress. On this, the pundits told- It is because of you that you have been observing incomplete Poornima fast until now, your children die prematurely. By observing full moon fasting methodically, your children will also live like the children of your elder sister. Then, obeying the orders of the pundits, he fasted on the full moon according to the rules and regulations. After some time he had a son, but he too soon died. Then he made the boy lie on his back and covered him with a cloth.

Then he called his elder sister and gave her the same generation to sit. When the elder sister started sitting on that generation, her clothes were touched by the generation and the dead child. As soon as his clothes touched the child, the boy came alive and started crying. Then the elder sister got angry and said to the younger sister – you wanted to stigmatize me. If I had sat in this generation, this boy would have died and you would accuse and scolding me with all kinds. Then the younger sister said – it was already dead, and now it is alive due to your fate. Both of us sisters fast on the full moon, you fulfill and I am incomplete, due to which my children die. But by your virtue this child has come to life. After this, he made a loud announcement in the whole city that from today everyone should observe full moon fast, this child is going to give happiness. It is said that since then this fast started.
