The prices of tomatoes and onions are increasing in the wholesale and retail markets in the city. At the same time, the effect of rising prices of petrol and diesel is also being seen on the prices of vegetables.

Wholesale price of tomato is Rs 60 per kg
A trader of Ghazipur Vegetable Market told news agency ANI that “The price of tomato in bulk is Rs 60 per kg at present. The rains have disrupted the production and supply chain. Apart from this, due to the increase in the price of petrol and diesel. He said that the wholesale rates of vegetables have increased by about Rs 10 and Rs 15 per kg, while it was around Rs 15-20 per kg in the retail market, he said.

Prices may increase further
Vegetable traders have indicated that if this situation continues, then in the coming weeks, the prices of these consumer products will see a further rise. Apart from this, Monu Paswan, a vegetable vendor in Greater Kailash-1, said that the price of good quality tomatoes is Rs 55-60 per kg at present. Whereas the price of onion is around Rs 50-55 per kg.

Vegetables being sold at higher rates in wholesale markets
Paswan said, “There has been an increase in rates in the last one week due to less supply. We are buying vegetables at higher rates in the wholesale markets, so the effect of the wave is being seen in the retail markets also.”

SP Gupta, president of Ghazipur Wholesale Vegetable and Fruit Market, said the wholesale prices of staple vegetables like onions and tomatoes have increased by about Rs 10-15 per kg due to short supply of these vegetables. He said that maximum onion and tomato in the national capital comes from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka.

Know how much the prices of vegetables have increased
He said that due to heavy rains in Karnataka and Maharashtra, onion and tomato crops got damaged there. This reduced the supply and hence increased the prices. Gupta further told PTI, “Now the wholesale price of onion is around Rs 40 per kg, while the price of tomato is Rs 900 per crate weighing 25 kg.” He said that the wholesale price of onion in Ghazipur mandi was generally Rs 20-25 per kg. Similarly, wholesale rates of tomatoes used to be in the range of Rs 16-20 per kg, which is Rs 35-36 per kg at present.

Rates increased by Rs 20 per kg
Gupta further said that at present, onion is being supplied mainly from Indore in Delhi. Apart from this, Haji Yameen, a wholesale trader of Okhla Mandi, said that the prices of tomatoes and onions have increased by about Rs 20 per kg. He said that earlier the wholesale price of onion was around Rs 20 per kg in Okhla mandi, which has now doubled. Another trader from Okhla mandi, Mohammad Ibrar, said the same was the case with tomatoes as it is now being sold at a wholesale price of Rs 30-40 per kg, as against Rs 15-20 per kg earlier.

Heavy damage due to rain
Traders also said that vegetables are also becoming costlier due to increase in transportation cost due to increase in fuel prices besides rains in southern Indian states. Apart from this, Yameen said that due to rains in southern Indian states, crops have been damaged, so the rates of those items have increased here.
