After the import of Vande Bharat train wheels from Ukraine was affected due to Ukraine-Russia war, Railways has now decided to manufacture them in Bengaluru. Sources gave this information. Vande Bharat train is the favorite scheme of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Railways wants to take it forward as per the schedule. Sources said the first consignment of 128 wheels has been transported from Ukraine to its neighboring country Romania by road and is currently stuck there. He said that the consignment is expected to be brought to India by plane by the third week of May.

Ukraine has been ordered for 36,000 wheels for a total of US$16 million. With manufacturing affected due to the war in Ukraine, the wheels of two Vande Bharat rakes will now be made at the Railway Wheel Factory at Yelahanka, Bengaluru. There are 16 coaches in a rake of Vande Bharat Express. Sources said the Railway Wheel Factory (RWF) has floated the tender for the parts required for these wheels and production is expected to be completed in the next two-three months.

Rail Wheel Factory has been manufacturing axles for these wheels. Even the axles of imported wheels are made here. This decision will also help the Railways to reduce its dependence on import of train wheels. At present, Railways imports 60-70 per cent of the wheels.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had announced in the General Budget 2022-23 that 400 new Vande Bharat trains would be developed in the next three years. As per the deadline announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the target is to run 75 such trains by August 15, 2023.
