Teacher recruitment scam: SC stays order for CBI probe on WBSSC’s plea

New Delhi. The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the High Court order for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the petition filed by the West Bengal Central School Service Commission (SSC) in connection with the teacher recruitment scam.

A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice Hima Kohli also stayed that part of the order of the single bench of the High Court, which had asked West Bengal Principal Secretary Manish Jain to appear before the court on Friday. Senior advocate AM Singhvi, appearing for the state government, told the bench, “At the moment when we are arguing, the Principal Secretary is in the dock before the High Court.”

Justice Chandrachud said, “The orders of the High Court will be stayed.” He listed the state government’s plea for three weeks later.

The Calcutta High Court on November 23 directed the CBI to investigate at whose behest the West Bengal SSC protected the jobs of illegally recruited employees by creating additional posts in state-sponsored and government-aided educational institutions. A petition was filed to do so. The CBI is already probing illegal appointments in such schools under prior orders of the High Court.
