Tamil Nadu: Constitutional amendment related to EWS reservation rejected

Chennai. In an all-party meeting chaired by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Saturday, 10 percent quota for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) The Constitutional Amendment was struck down on the grounds that it had led to ‘caste discrimination’ among the poor.

Main opposition AIADMK and its ally Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) boycotted the meeting. The meeting urged the state government to “strongly” go ahead with the decision to file a review petition against the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the EWS reservation.

The ruling DMK has already announced that it will file a review petition against the November 8 Supreme Court verdict upholding the EWS reservation.

“We reject the 103rd Constitutional Amendment, in which 10 percent reservation has been provided to the progressed castes,” the all-party meeting said. This is against the social justice envisaged by the constitution and various decisions of the apex court and creates caste discrimination among the poor. (Language)
