Gita Gopinath: International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief Gita Gopinath is about to step down. It has been said by the IMF that she will leave her post in January. With this it was told that Gita Gopinath will once again return to the work of teaching in the Department of Economics of Harvard University. In fact, Howard had extended Gita Gopinath’s leave for a year. Due to this, he got an opportunity to work in IMF for three years.

Geeta, 49, was the John Zwanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics at Harvard University before joining the IMF. Geeta was born in Mysore, India, she is the first woman to reach the post of IMF chief. Apart from this, Geeta is the second Indian after former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan to reach this position in IFM.

IMF praised the work
It has been said by the IMF that the search for Gita Gopinath’s successor will be started soon. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said that she did a wonderful job during the Corona period.

Kristalina Georgieva praised Geeta’s contribution. The IMF said that Geeta has a deep understanding of international finance and microeconomics, which has benefited the institute.

In addition to helping formulate policies and set strategies for the IMF and evaluate the performance of various countries, she will also oversee the World Economic Outlook Report, which is considered a major survey of the global economy. Geeta Gopinath, a graduate of Lady Shri Ram College, New Delhi, holds an MA degree from Delhi School of Economics.

She then went to Princeton University for further studies, from where she earned her PhD in Economics in 2001 in International Macroeconomics and Business. Before moving to Harvard in 2005, Geeta was an assistant professor at the University of Chicago. He was awarded the Bhagwati Puraskar for the best paper published in the Journal of International Economics in 2003 and 2004.

In 2014, he was named one of the top 25 economists under the age of 45 by the IMF and in 2011 he was named a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader. His extensive research and writings also include a review of demonetisation done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the year 2016. A few days after demonetisation, he wrote in a paper that this (demonetisation) move of the government seems to be hurting the Indian economy.
