Hamirpur News: Children caught in the grip of pneumonia in severe winter, 10 to 15 patients reaching OPD daily. 1 News Track English

Hamirpur News: Due to the severe winter, young children have started falling prey to pneumonia. In the OPD of the district hospital, 10 to 15 children of the age group of six months to two years are getting complaints of pneumonia (pneumonia ki shikayat). Apart from this, the changing trend of weather is making people of all ages vulnerable to cold-related diseases. Weak and premature babies need special care during this season. On the other hand, the Health Department is preparing to run awareness programs in each block regarding prevention of pneumonia.

The weather has changed since last two days. There are continuous clouds in the sky and it is raining. This has brought down the temperature. Due to the fall in both the minimum and maximum temperatures, it is getting cold both day and night and the situation has worsened further due to cold winds. In such a season, innocent children have started falling prey to pneumonia. The number of children suffering from pneumonia is increasing every day.

Dr. Ashutosh Niranjan, Neonatologist and Pediatrician of District Women’s Hospital said that 10 to 15 children are coming to the OPD of the hospital every day after suffering from pneumonia. Most of them are children in the age group of six months to two years. Parents have to protect their children from this weather. Wear at least three to four clothes to protect them from cold.

Dr. Ashutosh told that pneumonia is a lung infection which is caused by bacteria, virus and fungus etc. This causes the air sacs of the lungs to swell or fill with fluid. Sometimes pneumonia takes a serious form. The symptoms of pneumonia are very similar to the symptoms of cold and flu. Therefore, whenever this happens, it is very important to recognize its symptoms first. This is a serious disease, which can happen to a person of any age. However, it most commonly affects children up to five years of age. Newborns and young children cannot express their problems openly, so it is very important to recognize the symptoms of pneumonia in young children. About 16 percent of the child is affected by pneumococcal bacterium, to prevent which PCV vaccine is given through all health centers and vaccination sessions in the district.

According to the National Family Health Survey-5 2020-21 (NFSH), 77.1 percent of children aged 12 to 23 months in the district are being vaccinated against deadly diseases. Whereas in the survey conducted in 2016-17, this figure was 52.5 percent.
