UP Election: Modi at the Centre, Yogi in UP, what do voters think about the double engine? These figures of Lokniti-CSDS will surprise

BJP is throwing full force in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections 2022. Since Narendra Modi came on the national stage, BJP has been giving the slogan of double engine government in every assembly election, but has this slogan been successful in getting BJP votes? Very interesting are the figures of Lokniti-CSDS.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP, riding on the raging Modi wave, won the power at the Center for the first time by securing a majority. About six months after the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, when the assembly elections in Haryana and Maharashtra came, the BJP led by Narendra Modi and Amit Shah appeared in a new color with a completely new strategy. The party gave the slogan of ‘Double Engine Government’ for the first time in the election campaign of Haryana and Maharashtra. BJP leaders appealed to the voters to bring a single party government at the Center and in the state. After this, PM Modi has appealed to the voters to bring a double engine government within Tripura, Assam, West Bengal and recently in Uttar Pradesh, Goa. Elections are to be held in Uttar Pradesh and Goa in February-March 2022.

A total of 40 assembly elections have been held in the country since the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Lokniti-CSDS conducted pre-voting and post-results surveys in 31 of these assembly elections, out of which 22 surveys asked voters questions about ‘double engine government’. People were asked, ‘Do they believe that for the development of their state, it is necessary to have a single party government at the center and in the state?’ Know through the data of Lokniti-CSDS what was the public opinion on this issue:

It is very difficult to gauge the mood of the people of UP.

Out of these 22 election surveys conducted by Lokniti-CSDS, the names of the four states in which the BJP and its allies were in power are Punjab, Rajasthan, Goa and Assam. BJP and its allies were successful in getting power in 12 of these 22 states. Goa and Assam are also included in this, where BJP was successful in getting power again in 2017 and 2021. In Punjab (2017) and Rajasthan (2018), the BJP lost power to the opposition. In both the states, the Congress grabbed power from the BJP. The states where BJP formed the government, mostly those states, where during the survey, the number of people who considered the double engine government better. There were some exceptions in these states, where the double engine government was not considered very good by the public, but BJP was successful in winning these states. Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Meghalaya are some such states.

If the voter’s opinion about the double engine government is seen year after year, then shortly after the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, assembly elections were held in Haryana, Maharashtra and Jharkhand. Now let’s have a look at the opinion of the voters in these states. In Haryana, 45 percent people believed that there should be a single party government at the Center and in the state. Similarly, 29 percent of the voters in Maharashtra and 41 percent of the voters in Jharkhand considered the double engine government as a better option. In these three states, 11, 10 and 7 percent people, respectively, completely agreed that the option of double engine government is completely useless.

As Delhi gave the opinion in 2015, the same result came

In 2015, 36% of Delhi voters completely rejected the option of a double engine government. This was the reason that in 2015, the Aam Aadmi Party got a thumping majority of the people of Delhi. Now let’s look at the 2016 data. Assembly elections were held in West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala this year. In Assam, about 46 percent people believed that the option of a double engine government was the right one. As a result of this, BJP came to power in Assam. In West Bengal, 29 per cent people considered the double engine government as a better option, while 40 per cent did not respond at all. Voters in Kerala and Tamil Nadu also considered the double engine government as good, but in these states BJP was not successful in getting power.

Between 2017 and 2020, the option of a double engine government was not considered better in Punjab, Meghalaya, Himachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Uttar Pradesh. On the other hand, Tripura, Rajasthan, Delhi and Uttarakhand had a higher percentage of people who considered double engine government better. Now the point to be noted here is that the voters in Delhi and Rajasthan considered the double engine to be better, but the results came in the opposite direction.

In the last elections, the number of people who considered the double engine government as a better option fell

Talking about the elections in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, which were held a few months back, there was a lack of people who considered the option of double engine government better. In Kerala, 54 percent people rejected the double engine. After this 40 percent people in Tamil Nadu rejected it. At the same time, in West Bengal, 33 percent people rejected the double engine. In all these states, the number of people who rejected the double engine option in 2016 was not that much. Even in Assam, the BJP came to power again, but here too, the number of people who considered the option of double engine government better, there was a decrease in the number.

Uttar Pradesh 2022 election dates have been announced, here the government of already double engine is running. It will be interesting to see how people see the double engine here. The important thing here is that BJP is in power in Uttar Pradesh and is fighting for its return. It will be interesting to see whether the public approves the double engine option when it comes back to power.
