Darrell Joseph Mitchell was born on 20 May 1991 in Hamilton. His father John Mitchell has been a player and coach of the New Zealand rugby team. Darrell also played rugby in his childhood, but he started playing cricket when his father became the coach of a rugby club in England. When he was 16 years old, his father started coaching in the Rugby Club of Australia. Here too Mitchell continued to play his cricket.
