For this, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has changed its excise policy. Let us tell you that in a recent administrative council meeting of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, a proposal has been approved to sell beverages like beer and other ready-to-drink (RTD) at departmental stores in urban areas.

Beer: After the change in the excise policy, beer and other ready-to-drink beverages can now be sold at big grocery shops and departmental stores in major cities of Jammu and Kashmir. The Administrative Council approved grant of license JKEL-2A for retail sale of beer and ready-to-drink beverages in departmental stores incorporating provisions in the Jammu and Kashmir Liquor License and Sale Rules, 1984 and Excise Policy, 2023-24. has given.

These beverages may contain
According to media reports, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks can be sold in addition to beer at grocery stores and departmental stores. Non-alcoholic drinks may include iced tea, chocolate milk, energy drinks, etc., while alcoholic drinks may contain hard lemonade, hard cola, and vodka, etc.

These terms and conditions have to be kept in mind
Beer sale will not be allowed in all departmental stores.
Only those departmental stores will be eligible for sale of beer, which are in commercial complex and having minimum area of ​​1200 square feet.
The annual turnover of such departmental stores located in the city of Jammu and Srinagar should be at least 5 crores and the annual turnover of departmental stores in urban areas of other districts should be more than 2 crores.
Departmental stores with an annual turnover of more than Rs 10 crore, having complete chains, can apply for a separate license for each of their stores.
– Departmental stores should be open for more than 12 months from the date of application, however, not applicable in case of new or recently opened departmental stores belonging to chain of departmental stores having annual turnover of more than Rs.10 crores.
Application will not be accepted for departmental stores set up at petrol pumps.
Departmental stores selling at least 6 grocery items including frozen foods, confectionery, bakery items, cosmetics, household items, utensils, sporting goods, electronic equipment, apparel and stationery.
