Statue Of Unity – United India

On October 31, India will become a proud record holder when Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates the Statue of Unity – a 182-metre statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Once unveiled on the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel, the statue would be the world’s tallest one. The total height of the statue from its base will be 240 metre consisting base level of 58 metre and statue of 182 metre. It took four years to complete this grand project by Larsen & Toubro, a renowned global construction company.

The height of ‘Statue of Unity’ will be nearly double of the Statue of Liberty (93 m).

Statue Of Unity was first announced in 2010 when PM Modi was the Gujarat CM.

The statue is being built near the Sardar Sarovar Dam in the tribal-dominated Narmada district, close to 200 kilometres from Ahmedabad.

It will be a tribute to the ‘Iron Man’ for his contribution to the unity and integrity of the country.

The statue will also be turned into a tourist spot with Gujarat Chief Minister promising world class facilities, a tribal museum as well as garden and boating facilities at the area. The museum will have 40,000 documents, 2,000 photographs and a research centre dedicated to Sardar Patel’s life.

Around 15,000 tourists are likely to visit the statue everyday, officials said.

The Statue of Unity will have a viewing gallery at a height of 153 m, which can accommodate up to 200 visitors at a go, and will offer an expansive view of the dam and its environs.

This 182-metre tall statue is being built with The 75000 cubic metres of concrete, 5700 metric tonne steel structure, 18500 tonne reinforced steel rods, 22500 tonne bronze sheets.

The iron needed for the statue and other structures was to be collected from farmers of villages all around India in a form of donation of their used farming instruments.

SVPRET (Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Rashtriya Ekta Trust) set up 36 offices across India to collect these iron instruments wherein over 500,000 Indian farmers have donated.

The statue is visible from a 7-km radius. The 182 metre height was decided to match the number of assembly constituencies in the state.

The monumental project was a staggering Rs 2,989 crore (US$420 million) project.
