Sports: This great athlete got his gold medal after 110 years

Jim Thorpe of America, who won gold medals in the patanthalon and decathlon events of track and field at the 1912 Olympics and one of the world’s greatest athletes, is now officially recognized as the winner after 110 years. For some reason these medals were taken away from him and his name was also removed from the record books. Now 110 years later, Thorpe has been declared the winner.

Talking about the whole matter, this matter was related to the terms and conditions of the Olympics. According to the rules, amateur (non-professional) players take part in the Olympics, whereas if a player takes money in exchange for the games, then he will be considered a professional and professional players cannot take part in the Olympics. Thorpe took money to play in the Baseball League for two seasons. In doing so, he was considered a professional player. Because of this, he was not eligible to participate in the Olympics. His medals were taken away after this incident came to light.

About two years earlier, the Bright Path Strong group had petitioned Thorpe to regain his honor, urging him to be declared the winner of both events in 1912. After hearing the matter, the IOC says that World Athletics has also agreed to amend its record.

Significantly, Thorpe died in the year 1953. The International Olympic Committee made the announcement on the 110th anniversary of his medal winning. IOC President Thomas Bach said – We welcome this decision. It was an extraordinary and unique situation.
